The Allende Institute was founded in 1950 by Peruvian artist Felipe Cossío del Pomar, in an 18th-century hacienda that once belonged to the Counts of Canal.
The institute played a significant part in bringing foreigners to San Miguel. After World War II, American veterans could study here on the GI Bill, and many of them stayed, helping build the town’s art scene and its large expat community.
Today it offers visual-arts programs, workshops, and Spanish courses. Don’t miss the attached museum.
