La Gruta Spa
Hot springs spa with a cave pool
La Gruta is the best-known hot springs spa near San Miguel, in the countryside north of town on the highway to Dolores Hidalgo. It has several warm, mineral-fed pools set in gardens, and its signature is a tunnel you wade through into a domed cave pool where the hot water pours in from above.
It’s a popular day out, so it gets busy on weekends; weekday mornings are calmer.
It’s forbidden to bring in food and drinks, but food and drinks, including some alcoholic drinks, are for sale. Lockers are free to use but require a 50 peso deposit (make sure to bring cash).

La Gruta is outside the city, so if you go by bus you’ll ride a Suburbano, one of the regional buses that run from San Miguel out to the surrounding villages.
While you’re there you might want to also check out Santuario de Atotonilco.
Other hot springs in the area include Escondido, which is about a 35 minute hike from the highway. The foot path shortcut recommended by Google Maps has been blocked off by fences, and you need to walk the long way around on public streets. There’s also Pedernal Spa on the other side of the highway from La Gruta.
