Presa Ignacio Allende is a large reservoir on the Río Laja, southwest of San Miguel. Presa Ignacio Allende is a large reservoir on the Río Laja, southwest of San Miguel. It’s a wide, open body of water surrounded by countryside, a complete change of scenery from the cobblestone streets of the center.

It’s popular for birdwatching, especially in winter when migrating waterbirds, including white pelicans, arrive. People also come for the lakeside views and sunsets.

It’s well outside the center, but you can get there on Urbanos Route 6, which runs out toward the reservoir. From the stop nearest the water it’s about a 10-minute walk to the shore. The directions on this page show exactly where to get off, and it’s worth checking when the last bus back leaves before you go.

  • Check the route number on the front, or ask the driver.
  • Wave it down. Buses also stop between stops.
  • Board at the front and pay 10 MXN cash.
  • Say "Baja!" a block before your stop.
  • Get off at the back.
  • Buses run about 6 AM to 9 PM.
