This large building, only a few minutes’ walk from the Centro, was the cloister of the Convent of La Concepción, right next to the Las Monjas church.

Today it’s the Centro Cultural Ignacio Ramírez “El Nigromante,” run by Mexico’s national fine arts institute, which is why everyone calls it Bellas Artes. Its huge courtyard is lined with galleries and classrooms.

It’s free to enter and open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm, so definitely drop by for a visit. Don’t miss the unfinished mural by David Alfaro Siqueiros about the life of Ignacio Allende, hidden away in a room off the courtyard.

Getting there

  • On foot: about 4 min from the Jardín.
  • Buses that stop nearby: Rutas 4, 5, 6 and 11 at Umarán y Zacateros (2 min walk); Ruta 10 at Zacateros (entre Umarán y Pila Seca) (2 min walk); Ruta 1 at Insurgentes (entre Hidalgo y Hernández Macías) (5 min walk).

  • Check the route number on the front, or ask the driver.

  • Flag it downAs the bus nears, raise your hand so the driver knows to stop for you.
  • Get on at the frontBoard at the front door. Buses can be crowded, so step toward the back to make room.
  • Pay the driverIt's 10 MXN, cash only. Pay as you board. Bring coins or small bills.
  • Signal your stopA block before, call out "Baja!" or press the buzzer if there is one.
  • Get off at the rearStep off at the back door when there is one, or the front if not.
  • Hours & frequencyMost routes run about 6 AM–9 PM, roughly every 10 minutes on main lines. Expect longer waits early, late, and on Sundays and holidays.
  • Good to knowKeep small change ready and belongings close. Knowing your destination's cross-streets or a nearby landmark helps the driver.
