It’s a community center, a theater, and an educational institution that hosts lectures, musical events, movies, and classes. more →

The Biblioteca Pública (public library) is more than a typical library. It was founded in 1954 by Canadian Helen Wale, and it has one of the largest English-language collections in Mexico.

It’s a community center, a theater, and an educational institution that hosts lectures, musical events, movies, and classes. Some of its most popular events include the thrice-weekly language exchanges, the chess club, and children’s art activities. It also publishes Atención San Miguel, the town’s long-running bilingual weekly newspaper.

It’s a beautiful space: an old colonial building featuring a fountain, murals, and a café. It’s a friendly place where everyone feels welcome.

There’s free wifi. It’s a very short walk from the Jardín and the Parroquia.

It’s open from 10am to 5pm Monday through Friday, and until 2pm on Saturdays.

Getting there

  • On foot: about 6 min from the Jardín.
  • Buses that stop nearby: Rutas 1 and 6 at Relox y Insurgentes (1 min walk); Ruta 4 at C. Insurgentes frente a Plazuela San Felipe Neri (2 min walk); Rutas 5 and 11 at Insurgentes (entre Hidalgo y Hernández Macías) (3 min walk).

  • Get off at the back.
  • Buses run about 6 AM to 9 PM.
  • Find your busMany buses show a route number on the front, some have it on the side, and some don't display a number at all. When in doubt, just ask the driver.
  • Where to catch itThis site documents many bus stops but not all of them. Sometimes buses can be flagged down between stops.
  • Flag it downAs the bus nears, raise your hand so the driver knows to stop for you.
  • Get on at the frontBoard at the front door. Buses can be crowded, so step toward the back to make room.
  • Pay the driverIt's 10 MXN, cash only. Pay as you board. Bring coins or small bills.
  • Signal your stopA block before, call out "Baja!" or press the buzzer if there is one.
  • Get off at the rearStep off at the back door when there is one, or the front if not.
  • Hours & frequencyMost routes run about 6 AM–9 PM, roughly every 10 minutes on main lines. Expect longer waits early, late, and on Sundays and holidays.
  • Good to knowKeep small change ready and belongings close. Knowing your destination's cross-streets or a nearby landmark helps the driver.
